Critical Reception

Paint Your Wagon was a critical and commercial disaster, widely panned for its excessive length, nonsensical plot, and the surprisingly un-musical performances of its leads, particularly Lee Marvin and Clint Eastwood, who famously sang off-key. Despite a substantial budget and big stars, it failed to recoup its costs and is often cited as one of the worst movie musicals ever made.

What Reviewers Say

  • The film is an ambitious but ultimately disastrous failure, plagued by a bloated runtime and unconvincing musical numbers.

  • Lee Marvin and Clint Eastwood's singing is notoriously bad, detracting significantly from the musical aspects.

  • Despite its flaws, some viewers find a certain campy charm in its sheer audacity.

Google audience: Audience reception is largely negative, with many criticizing the film's excessive length, poor musical performances, and nonsensical plot. Some acknowledge it as a 'so bad it's good' cult classic.
