The Golden Palace begins where The Golden Girls had ended, in the quartet's now-sold Miami house. With Dorothy Zbornak having married and left in the previous series finale, the three remaining cast members (Dorothy's mother, Sophia Petrillo, Rose Nylund, and Blanche Devereaux) decide to invest in a Miami hotel that is up for sale. The hotel, however, is revealed to have been stripped of all of its personnel in an effort to appear more profitable, leaving only two employees: Roland Wilson, the hotel's manager, and Chuy Castillos, the hotel's chef. This requires the women to perform all the tasks of the hotel's staff.

Plot Summary

The Golden Palace picks up after the girls have sold their Miami cheesecake restaurant and moved to a glamorous hotel they purchased with their earnings. Sophia continues to be the sharp-tongued matriarch, Blanche struggles with her romantic life within the confines of the hotel, and Rose finds herself navigating new friendships and professional challenges. Dorothy, having found love and moved away, is replaced by Roland Wilson, a suave and somewhat naive hotel manager, and Dexter Jones, a resourceful handyman who often clashes with the women.

Critical Reception

The Golden Palace faced the difficult task of living up to the immense popularity of its predecessor, The Golden Girls. While it retained the charm and comedic talents of its main cast, the new setting and the absence of Bea Arthur's Dorothy proved to be significant hurdles. Critics and audiences alike found the show to be a decent successor, but it ultimately lacked the same spark and cohesive chemistry that made the original a phenomenon. It was generally considered a respectable but less impactful continuation of the beloved series.

What Reviewers Say

 • Praise for the enduring chemistry and comedic timing of White, McClanahan, and Getty.

 • Mixed reviews on the premise of a hotel setting compared to the relatable cheesecake factory.

 • Appreciation for the addition of Don Cheadle, though his character was sometimes underutilized.

Google audience: Audience reception was generally positive towards the core actresses, with many appreciating the continuation of their favorite characters. However, some viewers missed the original dynamic and found the hotel setting less engaging than the previous Miami house and restaurant.

Not the terrible continuation spinoff some have made this out to be. There are some loud laughs - just not as many without the dry wit of Dorothy and the four-character dynamic she completed in The Golden Girls. The remaining three t...
